Countries with the Largest Militaries (Ranked by Active Personnel)
China has the world's largest military by active personnel — approximately 2,035,000 active-duty service members as of 2024, according to IISS Military Balance estimates. India ranks second at roughly 1,476,000, the United States third at approximately 1,316,000. North Korea and Russia complete the top five. But personnel count is only one dimension of military capability: the United States spends more on defense than the next ten countries combined, and technology, doctrine, and logistics matter as much as headcount.
