Pioneer 10 and 11 drifted slightly off their predicted paths, as if something were tugging them back toward the Sun. The pull was tiny but steady, and it fit no known force. Physicists proposed dark matter, modified gravity, and new fields. The answer, worked out in detail by 2012, was the spacecraft's own waste heat.
