Jupiter's Auroras: The Most Powerful Light Show in the Solar System
Jupiter's auroras are not scaled-up versions of Earth's. They are a fundamentally different phenomenon: driven not primarily by the solar wind but by the volcanic output of Io, a moon so geologically active it pumps a ton of sulfur dioxide per second into space. The resulting plasma torus is the actual engine of Jupiter's polar glow — producing auroral emissions roughly 1,000 times more energetic than anything Earth generates, visible in UV and X-ray from telescopes hundreds of millions of kilometers away.
