cephalopods

An octopus can match the texture and color of a rocky seafloor in under 300 milliseconds—while being completely colorblind. This paradox reveals one of nature's most sophisticated biological display systems: three layers of pigment and structural color cells controlled directly by the brain, operating faster than conscious thought.

An octopus has roughly 500 million neurons — about as many as a dog — but two-thirds of those neurons are not in its brain. They are distributed across eight arms, each of which can taste, touch, decide, and act without ever consulting the central brain. This is the story of how intelligence can evolve in a completely different shape.

Octopuses have nine brains, blue blood, and three hearts — and their intelligence evolved completely independently from ours.
